The Fregate bird is the pirate of the air; unable to swim or land on water, it uses a combination of speed and skillful manoeuvres to steal the 'loot' of other seabirds. Whilst exploring the Seychelles in 1744, Lazare Picault was so impressed by the aerial acrobatics of this local bird that he named an island after it - Fregate Island.
